Sure it’s 1944, but you’ve managed to keep the war and winter far away, at least for the evening.
Inside your den, you’re settled comfortably in your overstuffed chair. Flames flicker in the fireplace on the far wall and you’ve tucked a cozy afghan around your feet for extra warmth. A hot toddy sits on the end table, next to a book. Both are within easy reach, yet the lamp behind your shoulder is off.
Why?
You don’t feel like reading tonight. Instead, you want to touch the world, from the comfort of your own home.
How?
Turns out there’s one more item of interest on the table next to the chair, a rectangular box. It’s filled with glass, plastic and knobs, yet it represents so much more.
You extend your hand past the toddy and turn on your desktop radio set. At first you hear nothing but a low hum, but as the tubes within it warm and light up, a world of music and information begins to spill from the speaker.
There’s a knob below the dial. Twist it and the set reaches out toward frequency after frequency. There are many stations available in your listening area to choose from, but tonight you don’t hesitate.
The pointer stops at CBS, where you will find “The Biggest Show in Town!”
Starting with Nelson Eddy.
