I hope you have been enjoying our tour of the perfect mid-century home powered by electricity. So far, we’ve seen the kitchen, living-dining rooms, bedrooms and the basement. Today we get to explore special areas in the house. So, let’s go.
Did you ever take a “hobby census” in your family, the brochure asks? It suggests making a list of leisure time amusements that everyone enjoys. Then you can plan special areas for activities that mean the most to your family. You could have a separate den, library or music room, but chances are you’ll want to combine several recreation centers into one, versatile space. Here are some examples.
First, dad’s headquarters. A special area with power tools like a portable handsaw, electric drill, grinder, buffer, sander and paint sprayer. In essence a complete home workshop. Included is a lighting fixture, adjustable floor lamp and plenty of outlets.

The garage can do much more than shelter just your car. It can include the aforementioned workshop, or a photographic dark room. If your hobby is gardening, you might even find space for a small greenhouse.

The pamphlet says that you could have electrically operated doors which could be automatically controlled by an electric eye from the dashboard of your car. That certainly came true. You could also keep your car clean and spiffy with a vacuum cleaner and polisher or just for it.

And finally, to the family room, everyone’s favorite place to have fun. You can eat, talk, play games or even sing around the piano. A center for carefree and informal living. You’ll find that friends feel wonderfully at home here too.
The Perfect Family Room
Be sure to have a snack bar to take care of a sudden yen for refreshments, coffee and sandwiches. A built-in aquarium, equipped with an electric filter pump, becomes a colorful living picture on the wall. Or have a sewing table, with two wall lamps installed for easy lighting. No family room would be complete without a well lighted game table for card or board games.
This has been a quick tour of special areas at the home, yet a fun one. Next, I will take you to explore the final portion of our mid-century home. The indoor-outdoor areas. All examples of “Living Better Electrically.” As always GVS as your home for Glorious Vintage Stuff!
